Congratulations to Andrew McFarlane and Mark Calder from British Off Road, winners of the Round I Mickey Thompson SSS Winch Challenge! The competition took place at Landcruiser Mountain Park over a freezing July weekend with all kinds of challenges including hill climbs, point-to-point GPS navigating, winch hills, creek crossings and winch walls. These Sunshine Coast locals pushed themselves and their Land Rover Defender 110 to the limits to take first place.
The Mickey Thompson Tires team was of course on the scene to assist the event organisers and keep score. We were delighted to see not just familiar faces from the Brisbane 4WDing scene but also teams from Townsville, Rockhampton and Gladstone up north, many of whom were competing in the SSS challenge for the first time. We were less pleased about the temperature, which dipped to -4°C at one stage and made us wish for arctic-quality sleeping bags each night.
Despite the cold it was still clear, sunny and dry and the entire event ran smoothly. All the drivers were happy with the tracks, which were longer than in previous years and included technical challenges that gave our teams a bit of a brainteaser and speed runs for the thrill of driving high-speed through the bush. There was only one breakage that caused the Make or Brake Racing team to drop out on Saturday – better luck next time, guys!
Congratulations also to the runners-up, Dan Pickels and Alf Gudgeon from Pissed and Broke Racing, and the third-place winners Brett Hingston and Troy Wilmott from BT Racing.
Huge thanks to Pete, Jo and Jubbo, who headed out to Landcruiser Park one week early to plan and set up the tracks! Thank you too to all the other officials who came on the weekend to help out with running the event.
If you were at the Mickey Thompson SSS Winch Challenge and have photos from the weekend, post them on our page. If you weren’t, see you at Round II over the last weekend in September!
