Fastest Tires On Earth

In 2004, Tom Burkland set the land speed record of 417,020 for a piston and wheel driven vehicle and Mickey Thompson Tires were there on the day to become the ‘Fastest Tire on Earth’.

Tom was originally going to run F-16 main-landing gear tires but after testing proved them unsuitable they then approached Mickey Thompson Tires to develop them a tire that could handle ultrahigh speeds.

The front tires are 21×5-15 Goodyears only rated for 300 mph. The rears, which do all the work and take most of the abuse, are 30×9-18 Mickey Thompson LSR tires rated to 530 mph.

On the 17th September 2012, George Poteet drove the Poteet and Main ‘Speed Demon’ streamliner to set the current land speed record of 439.024 miles per hour for a piston and wheel driven vehicle and Mickey Thompson Tires were there again on that day to secure their position as the ‘Fastest Tire on Earth’.
